DIY Packing Tips for Your Big Move

A to Z Movers is dedicated to making your moving experience as stress-free as possible. We have the ability to pack and transport all your belongings to your new residence or commercial property. To get the most out of your moving experience, it is important to properly prepare your belongings for departure. Here are a few helpful packing tips:

Pace Yourself in Preparation for the move. Plan to set goals and targets for yourself as you pack the contents of your home. Maybe our plan will be to pack for one hour per day or if you have an eight-room house, you will plan to finish 1 room per week.  Do not wait until the last minute to pack your belongings as the risk of contents not being organized at your new home rises dramatically.

A spare parts box gives you a space to put trinkets, knick-knacks, and other odds and ends that may not have a home currently, but you’re still not willing to junk them.

Pack and set aside personal items and essential items. There are going to be contents that you need right away once you move into your new home -it is crucial for you to be able to access those items with ease. Such items may include paperwork/closing documents, medicine or other healthcare products, cleaning supplies, or other important items. Make sure that this box is well marked for the movers.

Label and Color Code if Possible. Labeling boxes is very important to help keep contents
organized at your new home. Labeling will also assist the mover’s efficiency as the movers will know exactly where to place your boxes. Color Coding is also very helpful and is always just as good as labeling boxes. Both labeling and color-coding are recommended when packing boxes.

Do not overpack a box, and be sure to use the right type of box to pack contents. Overpacking a box can make moving the box awkward for the movers. A good general rule is if the box is too heavy for you to move then the box is probably packed incorrectly. It is always best to put heavy items in smaller boxes and lighter items in bigger boxes.

Do not leave empty spaces in your boxes. Leaving empty spaces can cause items to shift around and get damaged. Also, partially filled boxes are more prone to collapsing which could, in turn, lead to more boxes or items getting damaged due to the collapse. If you do not have anything left to pack in a partially packed box, it would be best to use packing paper to fill in the gaps and to make sure the top of the box is nice and firm.

Re-purpose items for packing. Most moving companies would be okay with moving suitcases, hampers, totes, trash barrels, and so on that you packed. Also, wrap a fragile item in a blanket if you are comfortable in doing so or use a pillow to top off a box to give the box a nice firm feel on top. Having the thought of repurposing while packing will help save on the costs of packing supplies as well as save the trees instead of using extra cardboard or paper if it’s not needed.

Use paper and bundle fragile items carefully. When packing fragile items, it is always best to use layers of paper in between contents in the boxes. It is also recommended to get a thicker box to pack very fragile items. Take time when packing and wrapping fragile items, this process should never be rushed.

Use plastic wrap when packing liquids. Most moving companies can move certain liquids as long as they are packed properly. Securing a plastic wrap around liquid bottles is very important in case of a spill or leak. The plastic wrap will help prevent damage to other items or leaks beyond the box into other contents being moved.
